Sketch, Sketch, Sketch

Every project requires creative thinking and sometimes jumping to conclusions creates moments that cause restraints and roadblocks right from the start. At Dwaiter, we use an approach that allows ideas to flow freely.

It’s called “sketching.” Yes—drawing, doodling, dabbling around, whatever phrase you prefer. This is something we all are aware of, but the importance of sketching is not well understood. So, let’s dive right in with some reasons why you should sketch out your ideas and tips on how to do it effectively.

What is sketching?

A sketch is a drawing made rapidly without too many details to represent an individual, scenery or an idea. Sketches are done using one or two different kinds of medium (pencils, pens, markers, etc). Sketching also is a practice used to help recall one or more aspects of a particular subject and to visualize your thoughts, ideas and solutions.

Why should I sketch?

Sketching takes abstract and undefined ideas and turns them into something real. You release solutions that have been trapped in your mind. By sketching, you also develop a larger variety of solutions and options within a faster time frame compared with if you skipped a sketching process.

How to sketch with a purpose

1. First, write down the idea and/or the problem you would like to solve and brainstorm around it. Almost think of this as a required baseline; it will only guide you in the right direction.

2. Sketch in layers with increasingly darker/thicker lines as you solidify the definite styles and progress you’d like to make. Doing this will show your progress and unique decision-making process.

3. Start small and work your way up. In other words, understand that it is all right to start with a pebble-size idea or sketch and add to it. Doing this allows more freedom and possible outcomes. Don’t worry, it will naturally grow before your eyes as you brainstorm.

4. Challenge the sketches you’ve just created and do some more that are different than the previous iterations. Make them truly unique.

And that’s it! You are on your way to drawing the future! Remember, don’t think about it too much—there is no right or wrong way to sketch. #SketchAWay :)
